On Sunday, Oct. 11, 2020, at about 12:30am, an officer was conducting routine patrol through the village of Chalan Kanoa on Saipan, when the officer noticed a group of individuals walking on the roadway.

The female officer pulled over to notify the group to use the sidewalk but, as the officer was talking to the group, one individual hit the officer’s vehicle. When the officer got down her vehicle, the suspect began screaming profanities at the female officer and walked up to her, repeatedly hitting her and scratching the officer in the face. At this time, family members and another officer on the scene managed to restrain the suspect in handcuffs. The suspect was later identified as Tanela Peter.

Peter was placed at the back of the vehicle as the officer educated the group on the hazards of walking on the roadway. Peter continued to kick and scream at the back of the vehicle before she was advised of her Miranda rights and was arrested for assault and battery. Peter was brought to Kanoa Resort for clearance before being transported to the Department of Corrections where she was booked and detained.

On Oct. 12, 2020, at about 6:47pm, Superior Court Associate Judge Joseph N. Camacho issued a Rule-5 for Peter for the charges of assault and battery, with bail set at $10,000. Peter was served while still detained at DOC. (PR)
