The Board of Education of the Public School System recently gave the go signal to repair three schools that were severely damaged by Super Typhoon Yutu in October 2018. The repairs will be funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The BOE approved the designs for three school repair and construction projects last Sept. 29. FEMA has funded a total of $7.7 million for the projects at the Francisco Mendiola Sablan Middle School, Da’ok Academy, and William S. Reyes Elementary School.

They are three out of the 30 projects that have been obligated by FEMA. Nine are still pending as design have yet to be forwarded, approved, and reviewed by the agency.

FEMA has obligated $1,356,640 for the reconstruction of FMS’ Building C. The board also approved the design and location of the new Da’ok Academy campus. The academy will be located at the northeast corner of Koblerville Elementary School. The board also approved the design of the new WSR auditorium/cafeteria project, which FEMA is funding for $1,798,938.93. The proposed location of the new auditorium will be on an existing concrete foundation of the school, just south of its parking lot. FEMA funded $2,776,578 for the Building C in WSR. The proposed project site is located on the campus in Chalan Kanoa. The existing Building C was severely damaged due to Typhoon Yutu in October 2018. What remains of the existing Building C is only the concrete floor slab and foundation.

BOE vice chair Herman Atalig, who is also BOE chairman committee for Capital Improvement Projects, said that in order for them to move forward, the schools have to come up with a design that will be forwarded to FEMA for review and approval.
