Voters’ action eyed on mandatory drug testing for elected officials
Rep. Christopher Leon Guerrero (Cov-Saipan) said yesterday that if a planned override of the governor’s veto of a bill requiring elected public officials to submit to drug testing fails, then he would introduce a legislative initiative to put the question before voters in November.
“The legislative initiative would be my last resort if we are unable to override the veto. Let the people decide whether they want all their elected public officials to undergo drug testing,” Leon Guerrero told Saipan Tribune.
The lawmaker said he has started asking his colleagues’ support in overriding the governor’s veto of his House Bill 18-152, as amended.
Gov. Eloy S. Inos, in his veto message, said HB 18-152, House Draft 2 may violate constitutional rights and is “vague and problematic.”
Rep. Lorenzo Deleon Guerrero (Ind-Saipan) also said that he will be seeking his fellow lawmakers’ support in overriding the governor’s veto of his bill imposing higher fines on those who fail to maintain automotive liability insurance and urges vehicle owners to register their vehicle on time.
