Court grants release of man accused of strangling wife

The Superior Court has granted the second request of a man accused of strangling his wife to modify bail.
Superior Court Associate Judge Joseph N. Camacho approved the second request of Guangchao Li to post a $10,000 unsecured bond and to be released to his sister, who has volunteered to serve as his third-party custodian.
Li’s sister swore to the court that she would call the police if Li does not follow court-imposed release conditions. She assured the court that she also understands that she will be held liable if Li does not show up for his scheduled hearings. Li was then released to his sister after surrendering his passport to the Office of the Attorney General.
Li was arrested and detained for allegedly assaulting his wife over an altercation involving a cellphone. He is charged with assault and battery, strangulation, assault, and disturbing the peace.
Initially, the court denied Li’s request for bail modification because he had no third-party custodian, keeping the initially imposed $10,000 cash bail.
Li is scheduled to return to court on Sept. 28 at 9am.
According to court documents, Li grabbed his wife’s right arm tightly and pushed her to the floor. She said Li punched her on her right shoulder then wrapped both of his hands around her neck tightly, holding her to the ground.
According to the victim, she has been separated from Li for over a year now due to past instances when he also harmed her.
