VFW Post 3457 accepting applications for contests
Are you passionate about American history, traditions, institutions, civic responsibility, flag etiquette, and patriotism? The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3457 is now accepting applications for the yearly program scholarship contest Voice of Democracy, Patriot’s Pen, and Teachers Award for students and teachers.
The VOD is for grades 9th to 12th, Patriot’s Pen is for grades 6th to 8th, and Smart/Maher Teacher Awards offer three categories kindergarten to 5th grade, 6th grade to 8th grade, and 9th grade to 12th grade. The deadline for applicants is Oct. 31, 2020.
According to VFW Post 3457 requirements, the VOD’s theme is “Is This Country the Founders Envisioned,” PP’s theme is “What is Patriotism to Me,” and the Smart/Maher Teacher Award anyone from kindergarten to 12th grade can nominate teachers who teach citizenship education at least half of the school day in a classroom environment and promote American’s history, traditions, and institutions effectively. Applicants must describe the nominee for the Smart/Maher Teacher Award in 350 words or fewer and why they feel their nominee should be selected.
For VOD, nominees have to download the VOD entry form and brochure to submit your essay to the VFW Post 3457, and students should also record their reading of the draft to an audio CD or flash drive. The recording has to be at a minimum of three minutes and no longer than five minutes.
For Patriot’s Pen, the nominee has to download and complete the PP entry form and brochure, and essays must be no less than 300 words and cannot exceed 400 words and should be submitted to the VFW Post 3457 headquarters.
The judging goes as follows: first at the Post level (Saipan), second at the district level (Marianas), and then against other entries from Posts in Asia. The National VOD winner will receive a $30,000 scholarship and the PP winner will receive a $5,000 award.
