2019 ICC TOP 10 WASTES
International Coastal Cleanup volunteers not only collect trash but also collect data on the different types of marine debris that mask the coastal areas of the CNMI. Last year, DCRM identified the following wastes as the Top 10, as collected by the volunteers.
1. Cigarette butts
2. Microplastics (plastic pieces less than 2.5 cm)
3. Beverage cans
4. Plastic bottle caps
5. Plastic lids
6. Tiny glass pieces (less than 2.5 cm)
7.Plastic bottles
8. Food wrappers
9. Metal bottle caps
10. Tiny foam pieces (less than 2.5 cm)
With at least five of the types being plastic, Division of Coastal Resources Management’s Colleen Flores advises everyone to take action and reduce the consumption of single-use plastic. “Pick-up after yourself and others, volunteer for community cleanups, educate and inform your friends and family on the importance of a trash-free sea. Although our efforts may seem small, our collective endeavors will make a massive difference.”
