The winner of the Saipan Golfers Association April Ace title was decided by just one stroke with Juan “Pan” Guerrero edging John “Nanni” Cruz in the Sept. 6 tournament at the Kingfisher Golf Links.

Guerrero fired a 40 on the front nine and 40 on the back for a gross 82 and ended up with a net 68 after deducting his 14 handicap. One shot behind with his net 68 was Cruz, an 18-handicapper and posted a 44 in the first nine holes and 43 in the last for a gross 87. Joining Guerrero and Cruz in the Top 3 of the April Ace tournament at the Talafofo golf course were Attorney General Edward Manibusan and Nick Sablan, who had similar net scores of 72. Sablan, a 6-handiccaper, had the lowest gross with his 78 after shooting a 38 on the front nine and 40 on the back. The 7-handicapper Manibusan also registered a 40 on the back nine, but tallied 39 on the front for a gross 79.

Besides winning the third place honors, Manibusan and Sablan also prevailed in the closest to the pin contest with the former doing it on the par-3, 140-yard hole No. 15 and the latter in No. 6—another par-3 hole, but a shorter one at 100 yards. Joe Sablan was the third player to make a closest to the pin shot, getting the feat on the par-3, 184-yard hole No. 12.

In the longest drive competition, Das Krishnan won in No. 7—a par-4, 315-yard hole. Guerrero also triumphed in the same category after ruling the longest hole in the course—the par-5, 563-yard hole No. 11.

With Guerrero taking the April Ace, he is now qualified to join the SGA Ace of Aces. Manibusan (January), Jung Eun Teack (February), and Nick Sablan (March) are the other club championship qualifiers and SGA will continue to hold two tournaments per month to fill up the remaining slots and make up for delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Next up for SGA is the May Ace tournament that will be played on Sept. 20 at the Laolao Bay Golf & Resort. Show time is at 8:30am, while tee off is scheduled for 9:30am.
