The Laly 4 Basketball Court in Chalan Kanoa now has solar lights, while a few more sports and recreational facilities in the villages will get upgrades in the future.
Rep. John Paul Sablan (R-Saipan) said that installation of the lighting fixtures at the basketball court was made possible through his office’s partnership with NMI Museum director Daniel Aquino, the Saipan Mayor’s Office, and HANMI Hardware. Saipan Mayor David Apatang loaned equipment to Sablan’s group to install the six solar lights last Saturday.
The installation of lights at the basketball court is part of a series of improvement projects that Sablan, though the help of the business sector, is working on since sports and recreation facilities in Precint 2 (Chalan Kanoa, Susupe, and some parts of Finasisu) have sustained damage from two super typhoons in the last six years. Two other facilities—located at CK District 1 and 3—will also undergo a facelift with the latter needing restoration with its flooring.
“The funds have been appropriated and we’re just waiting for other documentation requirement so we can start these projects,” Sablan said.
The lawmaker also thanked members of the business community for stepping forward, especially and helping improve facilities that benefits the islands’ residents, especially the youth. Sablan said he understands that we are in the trying times because COVID-19 pandemic, so he appreciates having partners to work on projects for the community.
The Precint 2 representative added that when restrictions on sports activities and other community events are lifted, he hopes to see the community maximize the availability of the various sports and recreational facilities on the islands.
