Rotary Club plants 40 flame trees

The Rotary Club of Saipan planted 40 flame trees last Saturday morning at the Tun Herman Pan Road on Saipan.
Called “Save the Flame Tree Project,” the event was done in collaboration with CNMI Forestry, the Saipan Mayor’s Office, the Commonwealth Ports Authority, Micronesia Islands Nature Alliance, and the Miss Earth Northern Marianas Organization as special guest.
“This project is the first of a three-phased plan to preserve one of the island’s most eye-catching trees that have been around for decades predominantly standing out along our main highway,” said Rotary Club of Saipan president Sonya Dancoe.
Phase 3 of the project will involve planting several donated flame trees in Suicide Cliff.
Flame trees throughout the CNMI bloom from April to August each year. “Usually around April, flame trees begin to bloom and the CNMI hosts the annual Flame Tree Festival in honor of the vibrant tree that has become symbolic of our islands. Sadly, many of them were silent victims of super typhoons Soudelor and Yutu,” said Dancoe. “It is our responsibility as members of the community to preserve this natural resource for future generations.”
The Rotaract Club of Saipan, which is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Saipan, joined planting trees as well, with directors Jaiden Santos and Lynnaray Sablan joined by Rotaract member Rayna Sablan at the event.
