Child saved from near-drowning at Sugar Dock

A fisherman saved a child from a near-drowning at Sugar Dock in Susupe last Thursday, Aug. 13.

According to a CNMI Department of Public Safety statement, DPS received a 911 call last Thursday at about 5:12pm about an unresponsive child at Sugar Dock. DPS Boating Safety and medics from the Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services were dispatched to the scene.

Witnesses in the area stated that they saw a child floating on their back with their head submerged underwater. A nearby fisherman jumped into the water, pulled the child to shore and laid them on the sand, and began conducting chest compressions. Witnesses told police that, as chest compressions were being performed, the child coughed out water and continued to do so as they were placed on their side. After about five minutes, the child finally took a breath of air. At this time, medics arrived on scene and brought the child to the Commonwealth Health Center where they were admitted to the Intensive Care Unit for observation. (PR)
