Saipancleanup hopes to inspire
A youth group that calls itself Saipancleanup did another cleanup last week, this time at the Agrihan Point, collecting around 12 trash bags of plastic waste and marine debris.
Logan Mister, who coordinates the cleanups, said it warms the heart that there are a lot of people who care enough of the island to volunteer. “We had eight amazing helpers who were there to volunteer. It is always great to know that people on the island would love to help and I hope they continue this good deed.”
The group did cleanups in the last two weeks, focusing on the pocket beaches in Dandan but also visited several sites where illegal dumping was happening.
“We have revisited sites that we cleaned up multiple times and we see progress with less trash, but at the same time we have seen some sites covered in trash again and it is quite disappointing,” said Mister.
One of the volunteers, Grace Choi, said, she has been helping out with Saipancleanup since she got back from college. “I am leaving for Las Vegas in less than two weeks, but I hope that Saipancleanup will continue doing what they are doing, even if it is once every two weeks…”
“I hope that even when Logan leaves for school in the spring semester, the people on island will keep the group together and pick up trash from time to time,” she added.
Mister also said that they want to participate in the International Coastal Cleanup, which typically happens on the third Sunday of September. “We plan to do cleanups as often as we can but it’s nice to know that we are running out of trash to pick up.”
“We hope we continue to inspire others to clean our beaches and hope people understand the importance of reducing single use plastic,” Mister added. (Chevy Alipio)
