Castro seeking second term

Luis John “L.J.” Castro (Ind-Saipan) filed his candidacy last Tuesday, Aug. 4, to seek a second term as a representative in the 22nd House of Representatives. This time, however, he will be running as an independent candidate and not under the Republican Party banner.
“After much contemplation and consideration, I have decided to seek office as an independent candidate. Though this decision may have some of you asking questions as to why I am running in this capacity, I want to assure you that regardless of where or how I run in this election, the desire instilled in me through my elders, my family, friends and the people of Precinct 1 will continue to be the driving force that pushes me forward in being a better servant leader to you,” said Castro.

Castro stated that within the last two years since he took office, “I have drafted and supported legislation that has helped in ensuring that our retirees continue to receive their full pension, that our school system receive the adequate funding it needs, authored laws to allow for more opportunities for our islands to be well equipped in times of disaster, and for our rich culture to thrive for our manhoben—young people—and visitors alike,” said Castro. “We are a precinct and a Commonwealth in crisis, but we can pull through this together. And if given the opportunity again, I will do my best to give you my best for our children, our man’åmko, and our friends and neighbors in seeing us through these tough times,” said Castro.
Last Nov. 14, 2018, Castro was elected to two years in the House of Representatives, and was sworn into office last Jan. 14, 2019. Should Castro win in the general elections this year, this will be his second term in office.
