The NMI Democratic Party has a full slate of candidates for the Nov. 3 general elections, marking the return of a two-political party system in the Commonwealth for the first time in over four decades.
NMI Democratic Party chair Nola K. Hix led their 17 candidates, including nine women, and mostly former independents, to the Commonwealth Election Commission in Susupe yesterday to beat the last day for the filing of candidacies.
Later, the candidates and their supporters held a “roadside wave for change” near the AK Toyota Beach Road intersection in San Jose.
Rota Sen. Paul A. Manglona and Donald Manglona, who both filed their candidacies yesterday as independents but are aligning with the Democratic Party, brings the Democratic Party’s slate to 20.
Paul Manglona is seeking re-election, while Donald Manglona is running for a Rota House of Representatives seat.
The Democratic Party is also supporting the re-election of Delegate Gregorio Kilili C. Sablan (Ind-MP), who is an independent but caucuses with the Democrats in the U.S. Congress.
For Saipan Senate, the party’s candidate is former Labor secretary Edith Deleon Guerrero.
For Saipan House Precinct 1, the candidates are Rep. Edwin K. Propst, Celina Babauta, Antonio Cabrera, Benusto “Ben” Piteg, and Peter Muna.
For Precinct 2, Rep. Tina Sablan is seeking re-election, with Luella Marciano also a candidate.
For Precinct 3, the party has Vicente Camacho, Alfred Saures, Corina Magofna, and Denita Yangtemai.
For Precinct 4, Rep. Sheila Babauta is seeking re-election, with Jenita Castro also running.
For Precinct 5, Rep. Richard Lizama is seeking re-election, with Leila Staffler also a candidate.
For Tinian, Jose Cruz is running for the Senate, while Frederick Dela Cruz is seeking a House seat.
Hix said in an interview that they are very excited because they haven’t had a full slate in over four decades. “I think it’s time, with everything that is happening around us. I think the people have spoken and they are ready for change. So we’re just proud to…be able to offer the alternative option to the status quo,” Hix said.
