Westlake to build new fire station in San Roque

The Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services recently entered into an agreement with Westlake Motors to begin the construction of a brand-new fire station in San Roque after nearly five years since the destruction of the station following Typhoon Soudelor in 2015.
According to Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services spokesperson Derek Gersonde, Westlake Motors’ Tom Liu met with DFEMS Commissioner Dennis C. Mendiola last July 1 to finalize the agreement for the new fire station and to discuss the planning, permitting, and construction phases.
Westlake recently signed a public land lease to lease the land surrounding the former fire station. In return for the lease, Westlake agreed to build the new fire station in the north with a public benefit value of $500,000.
Gersonde said the groundbreaking for construction is anticipated for December 2020 and completion of the new Fire Station 6 in San Roque is expected in 2022.
Typhoon Soudelor devastated the island of Saipan on Aug. 2, 2015, leaving many homes, businesses and buildings destroyed. One of those buildings was the San Roque Fire Station 6. At that time, former DFEMS commissioner Claudio K. Norita met with the Department of Public Lands and Westlake Motors’ Liu regarding the negotiations for the land lease for the property where the damaged San Roque fire station is located.
The fire station has been inoperable after Super Typhoon Soudelor.
