Zero filers on first day of submission

The Commonwealth Election Commission opened Monday the submission of nominating petition and candidacy for the upcoming Nov. 3 general elections, but no one came to submit any filings.
CEC executive director Julita A. Villagomez said it’s just normal in CNMI elections—that nobody files on the first day but many candidates usually file on the last day of submission.
Aug. 5 is the deadline to submit nominating petitions and candidacies.
Villagomez said CEC is open from 8am to 4pm Monday to Friday. Monday was also the last day to establish residency requirements. The last day of registration to vote is Sept. 4.
Villagomez encourages interested candidates to come in early before the deadline to avoid jampacking the CEC office in Susupe. She said people should be wearing masks and practice proper social distancing at CEC office’s service counter.
The positions that are up for grabs in the coming general elections on Nov. 3 is for the U.S. delegate to the U.S. House of Representatives and 34 other government positions, excluding three from the Judiciary for retention.
This election used to be called mid-term elections.
