The Saipan International School Model United Nations will host a free virtual MUN workshop for high school students starting this weekend and running through July. The two-to-three-hour online sessions will take place on June 13-14, 20-21; July 5, 11-12 and will finish with a mock MUN committee on July 18-19.

Model United Nations is an educational simulation of the United Nations where students can role play as diplomats from their assigned nation. This engages students in diplomacy and a deeper understanding of current events and issues world leaders are charged with solving. Students will learn parliamentary procedure, current issues, research skills, how to write a position paper, and effective debate tactics in a MUN setting.

SIS’ MUN club participated in a MUN conference in Jeju in 2019 and in a two-day virtual conference hosted by the American School of Warsaw, or ZYGMUN, in May.

Students from all over the world participated in ZYGMUN this year, making the competition tough, requiring students to be prepared for debate and questioning, and boosting the confidence of SIS students.

“In the beginning, I had certain worries and fears that I might not do very well or completely fail in doing it,” said sophomore James Zeng. “But by the end of the conference, I felt like I learned a lot from each individual country and made many friends around the globe.”

In only its second year, SIS’ vibrant MUN club stayed active despite cancellation after cancellation. “We had a lot of cancelled events this year,” SISMUN president Eileen No said. “Instead of giving up, we planned our own in-school SISMUN two-day conference before attending ZYGMUN online.”

“I started this club because I was intrigued by MUN,” No said. “Now it is time to bring what we have learned back home and hopefully inspire students in the CNMI to carry the torch.”
