“No wonder stars are winking
No wonder heaven mocks
At men who cease from drinking
Good booze because of clocks”

—Oliver St. John Gogarty, 1878 -1957

Dream Drunkard Dream

“Last call,” bartenders all over often say
customers drink up and order a few more
spending much of their hard-earned pay
then buy more booze going out the door
panic hit on the way home when I thought
drunk as I may be at home there is no booze
stumbling into a mom & pop store I bought
now I can drink to oblivion if I so choose
hopefully next time you pass out when drunk
in a comfortable place or pleasant location
whether a couch, lounge chair, bed or bunk
make sure you take advantage of the situation
then dream drunkard dream and get lost in it
ascend descend befriend as you lose mind control
all night long for an hour or minute by minute
your brain pan may release your tortured soul
you may sail tranquil seas climb mountains high
find friends at the bottom of the Mariana Trench
float beyond the farthest stars visible in the sky
hit a World Series homerun or sit on the bench
make love to and marry a two headed manatee
discover magnetic Martians eating iron ore earth
find yourself sloshing around in a whiskey sea
rolling over in a grave laughing at a hyena’s mirth
no delirium tremens for you tonight is a circus
acrobats drop ice cream cones into your mouth
you breeze by a carnival barker trying to jerk us
dream drunkard dream North East West South.
