MCS employees advance professional capacities

Mount Carmel School fourth-grade teacher Claire Cabrera, school president Dr. Galvin Deleon Guerrero, and office manager Leeani Villagomez recently advanced in their capacity as educators through graduate degrees and professional certification.

Cabrera earned her master’s degree in international teaching through the partnership between Northern Marianas College and Framingham State University. “I pursued my graduate degree because I wanted to learn more about teaching and to acquire new skills that would make me a better educator,” said Cabrera. “I would like to thank Mount Carmel School for their support and understanding. I didn’t start my educational journey with the Mount Carmel School family, but I am proud to say that I am closing this journey as a Knight. With the prayers, words of encouragement and a helping hand from my colleagues, the staff, and administrators, I was able to keep my focus and finish.” 

Deleon Guerrero, EdD, also earned distinction as a certified trainer for Edmodo. The certification was granted after Deleon Guerrero completed a rigorous online course that provided participants with an understanding of how to teach others to create and engage in flexible digital learning spaces with Edmodo. In addition to exploring various Edmodo features, the course covered a wide range of pedagogical concepts related to online learning, including blended learning, flipped classrooms, social-emotional learning, differentiated instruction, gamification, and project-based learning.

In granting Deleon Guerrero the certification, Kate Baker, Edmodo’s senior community engagement manager, wrote, “We are impressed with your dedication and inspired by the variety of ways you use Edmodo to engage your students and colleagues.”

In addition, Villagomez continues to advance in her professional capacity by enrolling into Southern New Hampshire University’s online program. She is currently an art and design major. Prior to working at MCS, Villagomez earned her associate degree in liberal arts at Northern Marianas College in 2017. “Earning my bachelor’s degree in art has always been a personal goal of mine,” said Villagomez. “I am also happy to have been able to expedite my graduation date (2022) because all my credits from NMC transferred.”

As for balancing a full-time job and her studies, Villagomez said it can be a challenge, “but I’m passionate about these aspects in my life. …I look forward to applying what I’ve been learning into my work at MCS and throughout my career.”
