Hopwood campus renovation is 90% complete

Renovations to the Hopwood Middle School campus, which was left in shambles as a result of Super Typhoon Yutu back in 2018, is now 90% complete.
As of last week, it’s now down to just the finishing touches on the classrooms that are under renovation, said Charlie Kenty, PSS associate commissioner for Administrative Services, during a special Board of Education board meeting last week
“The repair work on Hopwood Middle School, as of this week, is 90% complete. The contractors are completing the finishing touches on the last 19 classrooms,” he said.
Aside from classrooms repairs, Kenty said the contractor is also renovating the hallways and the fence surrounding the buildings to ensure the safety of students.
“The hallway from the pala pala [pavilion] is being completed, the fence surrounding the damaged buildings will be completed by next week and the other work that needs to be completed is the bus stop roof. That’s as far as the progress we’ve made with the old Hopwood campus,” he said.
When asked by Board of Education member Marylou Ada whether students would be returning to the old campus once schools re-open in September, Kenty said that is most likely, considering how much progress has been made to repair the school. “The progress the contractors are making are according to plan, so as soon as the fence are secured, we will be having a meeting with the committee and the principal to start planning on the relocation,” he said.
Ada also questioned whether the temporary classroom tents in Koblerville would be retired but Kenty said that is still subject to discussion.
“We have not discussed any plans to take down the tents in Koblerville but maybe that’s something that can be discussed with the commissioner and the board on what is the plan for the tents. Certainly, once the school moves to their old campus and occupy the 19 classrooms we identified to be ready for next school year, then we can proceed with a plan,” he said.
