The group Friends of CWs held their fourth distribution of care packages last Saturday at the Garapan Central Park’s Roundhouse, giving away 161 care packages that included rice, canned goods, butane, toilet tissue, noodles, and coffee.

Volunteer Alma Basilgo thanked the sponsors for their donations and assistance for the donations, which benefited foreign workers in the CNMI who are unemployed and have been furloughed during this COVID-19 pandemic.

Friends of CWs has been donating to that particular segment of the population since many are ineligible for food stamp assistance. According to Basilgo, they have already assisted about 400 individuals in the last couple of weeks.

One of the volunteers mentioned that this has been their fourth distribution on Saipan and would like to move on and help CW workers on Rota and Tinian. “We want to cover as much as we can but it will also depend on funding,” she added.

Friends of CW has managed to get donors for Rota’s care package distribution. They are looking to give out packages to about 200 individuals from the list supplied by the U.S. Department of Labor.

One of the contract workers who received care packages last Saturday said, “I am very thankful that they are helping us contract workers. It is really such a big help during these times.”

Friends of CW are still open for donations or sponsors for Rota that will be the next care package distribution. (Chevy Alipio)
