A Saipan restaurant that specializes in steak, pork, and seafood dishes served in a cast iron sizzling hot plate looks to rebound after its opening last February was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Fork & Spoon: House of Sizzling held its grand opening only last Feb. 1, but had to temporarily suspend operations last March 30 as the islands went into semi-lockdown to help stop the spread of the coronavirus. The restaurant reopened last May 4 but co-owner Joan Boongaling said serving take-out is just not the same.
“Our sales have been greatly affected. …Our setup is for dine-in only, [for diners] to enjoy the experience of eating on a hot sizzling plate. With only take-out service, that experience is taken out of the equation and our sales hit rock bottom,” she said.

Fork & Spoon has reconfigured its dining area for minimum contact and adhere to the 6-foot social distancing protocol for customers picking up orders. Boongaling said their take-out menu is the same as its pre-COVID-19 offerings, sans the hot plate of course.
Fork & Spoon customers can still choose from bestsellers like garlic steak bites, rice sisig, beef pepper rice, pepper squid, garlic pepper shrimp, pork pepper rice, and the mouth-watering 8-ounce New York steak. “Thank you for your continued patronage of Fork & Spoon during these times. We will continue to serve you through take-out service only,” she said.
Boongaling said many of their loyal customers miss the sizzle of the cast iron hot plate, though, and she wishes a quick return to normal operations.
