FBI alert out on COVID-19 scams
The Federal Bureau of Investigation is urging the public to be wary of COVID-19-related scams that steal people’s money and personal information.
In a video posted over the weekend, FBI Honolulu Field Office special agent Sam Miranda said that, as people increase activity online for work and study, criminals are already targeting their next victim.
“Scammers are leveraging the COVID-19 pandemic to steal your money and your personal information. Don’t let them,” Miranda said. He advised people to be wary of websites and apps claiming to track COVID-19 cases worldwide. He asked people to look out for emails asking them to verify their personal information in order to receive an economic stimulus check from the government.
Miranda also warned against anyone selling products to prevent, treat, or cure COVID-91.
