Car mows down 3-year-old child
On Sunday, May 10, 2020, at about 6:26pm, the CNMI Department of Public Safety received a 911 call reporting a group of individuals causing a disturbance in progress in As Lito on Saipan. A police officer driving a personal vehicle was driving by and noticed the commotion, and immediately responded to the scene.
At the scene, the officer immediately noticed a group of individuals yelling at each other. The officer learned from the individuals that the disturbance started from an auto-pedestrian accident involving a 3-year-old that occurred just a few minutes earlier.
The officer learned that the 3-year-old was playing in the neighbor’s yard with other kids when the homeowner’s daughter was returning from the store. The 19-year-old driver noticed children playing in her parent’s yard and waited for them to move away from the path of the vehicle before proceeding up the driveway. As the driver began driving forward, the kids began hitting the vehicle and yelling, “Stop!” As soon as the driver got out of the vehicle, they noticed an adult pulling a 3-year-old child from under the car. Both families began arguing right before the officer arrived at the scene.
The 3-year-old was brought to the Commonwealth Health Center emergency room where the child was treated and admitted for further treatment. The child is now reportedly in stable condition.
It was later found that the parents of the 3-year-old were visiting family in the area. The driver was issued one citation, consisting of two violations. This case continues to remains under investigation. The CNMI Department of Public Safety encourages the public to call 911 anytime to report a crime or an emergency. (PR)
