A male inmate allegedly stabbed and wounded with a hand-made knife a male barber who had just cut his hair inside the Department of Correction in Susupe last Thursday morning.

Kennedy Masubed, 46, admitted stabbing the barber because the latter is gay, police said.

The barber had stab wounds on the top of his head and left temple and was brought to the Commonwealth Health Center for treatment.

Masubed was taken yesterday afternoon before Superior Court Associate Judge Joseph N. Camacho on charges of assault with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery, and disturbing the peace. A bail of $25,000 cash was imposed on Masubed. Preliminary hearing will be on May 20 at 10am.

According to police detective Kevin R. Maratita in his declaration filed in court, a police officer responded to DOC Thursday at 10:28am after receiving a call about a disturbance. When the officer arrived at DOC, he met with one of the inmates, identified as Masubed, who was inside one of the holding rooms in the booking area. The officer learned that Masubed had stabbed one of the civilians who was providing barber services at DOC.

Masubed allegedly admitted to the officer that, after the barber finished cutting his hair, he got up then stabbed the barber “because he is gay.”

DOC Capt. Manny Quitano told the officer in an interview that he and another DOC officer were present in the room when the incident happened. Quitano said Masubed got up after getting his haircut, then turned and hit the barber twice.

Quitano said he pinned down Masubed and it was only then that he noticed that the suspect had a knife in his hand. The other DOC officer helped Quitano pin Masubed.

In a police interview with the barber, he said he goes to DOC and give haircuts to the inmates. In this incident, he had just finished cutting Masubed’s hair when the inmate got up from the chair and suddenly started punching him. When he tried to block the punches, he fell. He said Masubed kept attacking him.

Police procured from the DOC Internal Affairs the “shank” or a hand-made knife that was seized from Masubed.

The police report did not mention why Masubed was in prison prior to the stabbing.
