A dry trade-wind pattern is expected to continue the next two weeks with only a few showers at times, according to the latest advisory from the National Weather Service in Guam.

The upper-level pattern is starting to become more favorable for shower development but trade-wind disturbances remain weak, said the NWS advisory last Friday.

“Guam will continue to receive more showers than the CNMI. Model guidance is beginning to lift deep convection north of 10N but keep rainfall amount between 1 to 2 inches for Guam the next two weeks or so with lower amounts across the CNMI. It may be a month or so before adequate rainfall returns to Guam and one to two months for Saipan and Tinian,” the advisory states.

“The Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone has strengthened and weak disturbances have edged farther north and west recently. These features have provided much-needed showers for most islands south of 8N across all of Micronesia. A favorable upper-level pattern has encouraged showers to develop farther north across Micronesia east of Chuuk. The northward shift in the convergence zone as well as the presence of upper-level divergence are indicators that a wetter pattern is beginning to establish across most islands of Micronesia south of 10N,” it added.

Right now, there are no official water conservation measures are in effect for the Mariana Islands. Officials report water levels are still above thresholds for concern.
