The Nutrition Assistance Program has seen an increase in the number of people applying for food stamps.

According to its latest numbers, NAP received 1,048 applications, which is in addition to the over 2,000 applications that have previously been issued.

NAP previously announced the extension of certifications for households whose certification were to expire. The March deadline was extended to June, April to July, and May to August.

Due to the extended protocols for social distancing from the Public Health Emergency declaration of Gov. Ralph DLG Torres, NAP will still be distributing benefits through drive-thru for the month of May. The drive-thru service will be from May 1 to 15 at the NAP office at As Lito, from 8am to 3pm.

Households that will be receiving benefits will only be in their vehicles and no walk-ins will be allowed. Walk-in service for benefit pick up will only be done from May 18 to 29, 2020.

Additionally, “only those whose names appear on the valid NAP identification card may receive their household’s benefits. The individual must have a valid photo identification card such as a valid driver’s license or passport.”

Drive-thru benefit issuance schedule for Saipan are as follows:

• May 1 Case Records Ending with “1”
• May 4 Case Records Ending with “2”
• May 5 Case Records Ending with “3”
• May 6 Case Records Ending with “4”
• May 7 Case Records Ending with “5”
• May 8 Case Records Ending with “6”
• May 11 Case Records Ending with “7”
• May 12 Case Records Ending with “8”
• May 13 Case Records Ending with “9”

NAP administrator Walter Macaranas is reminding households that are coming in May to receive their benefits through the drive-thru to follow the schedule and to bring their NAP ID and a valid photo ID.

For more status of applications you may contact the NAP office at 237-2801 or 2802.
