CPA-CUC talks to reactivate power plant gets go-ahead
The Commonwealth Ports Authority board’s Airport Facilities Committee has authorized CPA executive director Christopher S. Tenorio to sit down with Commonwealth Utilities Corp. executive director Gary P. Camacho to start negotiating on CUC’s plan to reactivate Power Plant 3, which is located in CPA’s property in Isley Field.
CPA board’s Airport Facilities Committee chair Barrie C. Toves said yesterday that if his committee approves the draft agreement with CUC, then the panel will recommend it to the full board for adoption.
At a recent Airport Facilities Committee meeting, Tenorio said the CPA management’s position right now is to ask the board if they can start negotiating with CUC on Power Plant 3.
Tenorio said the power plant is going to benefit CPA not only for backup to its power generators but also for water supply when there is power outage.
CUC is trying to reactivate Power Plant 3 for use during emergencies or disasters. The plant was deactivated in 2002.
Tenorio said they just recently had a power outage and the airport was on a generator for five days. Tenorio said during the last day, there was only one generator working.
Board director Pete Reyes asked if there is any assurance by CUC that when CPA turns over the property, that CUC is going to support the power operation of the airport. Tenorio said they want to make sure that they put it in the agreement.
Toves said it’s the management’s intention to request the committee to place this matter on the board for adoption to authorize the negotiation to start.
Board vice chair Roman Tudela then moved to authorize Tenorio to start negotiating with Camacho and CUC.
