CNMI shines in UOG Chamorro language, arts competition

CNMI schools that participated in University of Guam’s annual Chamorro Language and Cultural Performing Arts competition were able to take home a total of 24 medals, 10 being in first place.

Jonas M. Barcinas, Public School System’s Chamorro and Carolinian Language Heritage Studies program director, praised the students for their exemplary work doing the competition, “for bringing home pride and joy for the CNMI.”

Ten CNMI students or groups placed first in various categories of the Chamorro Language and Cultural Performing Arts Competition, which was held on March 9-10 at the University of Guam.

Hopwood Middle School won first place in Middle School Chant Dance.

Other first-place winners from the CNMI include:

• Dovianne Tudela, Koblerville Elementary School, K-1 Grade Storytelling. She was coached by Alma Villagomez.

• Hopwood Middle School, Middle School Chant. The students were coached by Vic Cabrera, Tracy Del Rosario, Didi and Dominic Tudela, and April Repeki.

• Hopwood Middle School, Middle School Choral Reading. They were coached by Donald Mendiola and Rebecca Sablan.

• Heaven Murphy, Chacha Oceanview Middle School, Oratory. She was coached by Rose Jones and Ronnie Aguon.

• Danyana Borja, Chacha Oceanview Middle School, Recitation. She was coached by Rose Jones and Ronnie Aguon.

• Tyara Reann Cruz, Chacha Oceanview Middle School, Middle School Essay. She was coached by Rose Jones and Ronnie Aguon.

• Issa Salazar, Marianas High School, Poetry Recitation. She was coached by Anita Sablan, Alvin Sablan, Cynthia Pangelinan, and Andrew Santos Sablan.

• Issa Salazar and Noryanka Skeirei, Marianas High School, Female Singer. They were coached by Anita Sablan, Alvin Sablan, Cynthia Pangelinan, and Andrew Santos Sablan.

• Dawno Jade Manglona Agbayani, Dr. Rita H. Inos Jr./Sr. High School, High School Proficiency. He was coached by Therese Manalang and James Manglona.

• Dawno Jade Manglona Agbayani, RHI, High School Oratorical/Sinangan. He was coached by Therese Manalang and James Manglona.

The second-place winners were:

• Marianas High School, Song with Dance. They were coached by Anita Sablan, Alvin Sablan, Cynthia Pangelinan, and Andrew Sablan.

• Marianas High School, Kantan Chamorrita Style singing. They were coached by Anita Sablan, Alvin Sablan, Cynthia Pangelinan, and Andrew Sablan.

• Deltona Takai, San Vicente Elementary School, Grade 4-5 Storytelling. Coached by Lorena Smith

• Geremy Santos, Tinian Elementary School, Middle School- Oratory. Coach by Angelina Fitial

• Tinian Elementary School, Choral Reading. Coach by Angelina Fitial

• Issa Tegita, Dandan Middle School, Oratory Poetry Recitation. Coach by Edinna Cepeda.

Taking home third place were:

• Nava Falig, Grade 4-5 Storytelling. Coached by Elsie San Nicolas

• Doreanne Tudela, Koblerville Elementary School, Grade 2-3 Storytelling. Coached by Lorenza Smith

• Jireh Cruz, Tinian Elementary School, Middle School Recitation. Coached by Angelina Fitial

• Dandan Middle School, Choral Reading. Coached by Edinna Cepeda

• Rowena Camacho, Hopwood Middle School, Oratory. Coached by April Repeki, Donald Mendiola and Victor Cabrera

• Heaven P. Murphy, Chacha Oceanview Middle School, Essay. Coached by Rose Jones and Ronnie Aguon

• Mark Dave Terlaje Pangelinan Jr., Marianas High School, High School Proficiency. Coached by Anita Sablan, Cynthia Pangelinan, Andrew Santos Sablan.

• Francisco M. Sablan Middle School, Middle School Choral Reading fourth place. Coached by Gloria Rasiang and Maryann Flores.
