Public warned of strong rip currents

The public is being warned of a high risk of rip currents along north and northwest facing reefs through late Friday afternoon.

Based on the information received from the National Weather Service in Tiyan, Guam, and compiled at the CNMI Emergency Operations Center State Warning Point, a long-period northwest swell will join forces with wrapping trade wind swell to create strong and frequent rip currents on the northern part of Saipan, Tinian, and Rota. This creates dangerous conditions for swimmers and beach goers.

The affected sites are near the Mochong and the Swimming Hole on Rota, near Puntan Tahgong on Tinian, and near Banzai Cliff, Wing Beach, and Cow Town Beach on Saipan.

Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away from shore that can pull the best swimmer out to sea. The public is advised that that strong rip currents will be life threatening along north and northwest facing reefs. (PR)
