Regal Cinemas and its charitable arm, the Regal Foundation, donated $1,038.31 to the Commonwealth Cancer Association last Feb. 28 as the foundation’s beneficiary for this year’s local charity drive.

Regal Cinemas general manager William I. Santos Jr. was joined by his staff in presenting the check donation to CCA treasurer Cesar Dumatol, who accepted the donation on behalf of CCA board of directors and membership.

According to Santos and supervisor Maybelline Nicdao, Regal Cinemas patrons can  donate to the Regal Foundation through its large in-theater donation drive known as the “Stars of Hope” during the summer months every year. Hollywood Theaters in San Jose chose the CCA as this year’s beneficiary.

CCA began as an alliance of volunteers in 2003, becoming formally chartered and incorporated in 2008. In 2009 the CCA achieved a tax-exempt status under 501 (c)(3). It provides direct financial assistance, assistance with nutritional supplements and other personal needs, as well as, certain types of medical equipment such as hospital beds, wheelchairs, and oxygen concentrators prescribed by a locally licensed physicians to qualifying clients in the CNMI who are receiving treatment for cancer.

CCA also facilitates monthly cancer survivors and caregiver support group meetings, engages in a variety of awareness and outreach activities, and has produced various educational publications such as brochures, fliers, videos and DVDs. Awareness activities and events related to cervical cancer, oral cancer, colorectal cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, and lung and pancreatic cancer are just a few of the annual calendar of educational and outreach activities carried out by CCA. The CCA also engages in programs such as early screening and detection, and patient navigation. The CCA has partnered with seven of the CNMI’s dental clinics, in order to see free oral cancer screenings for all ages.
