IPI to rebury ancestral remains by July
There’s now a definite reburial date of the human remains found on the Imperial Pacific International (CNMI) LLC construction site in Garapan.
Commonwealth Casino Commission executive director Edward Deleon Guerrero said that IPI and the Historic Preservation Office came to a decision to rebury the remains this July.
According to Deleon Guerrero, both IPI and HPO are concerned about the remains due cultural reasons. He said that HPO is taking the lead in terms of where the human remains will be buried.
“They [HPO and IPI] have made sure they reached out to the communities on behalf of their concerns about the ancestral remains,” he said. “It is very important that we respect our ancestors and have a common understanding on what is the best way to be respectful of the remains.”
The CCC executive director said human remains found by developers in their construction sites should be treated with respect.
“Other developers should really think about this issue because this is not only a cost issue but an emotional [and] cultural issue [because they’re] our ancestors,” he said. (Chevy Kate Alipio)
