KHS paddlers show way

Kagman High School ruled the first two legs of the 2019-2020 Public School System Interscholastic High School Canoe Race Series.
After eight events, Kagman collected 53 points to place ahead of Marianas High School (27) and Saipan Southern High School (26).
Kagman prevailed in the girls 500m event and swept the boys and mixed 500m and 1,000m races held in the waters off Kilili Beach last Feb. 22 and then picked up where it left off after topping the long distance course last Saturday.
The Lady Ayuyus finished the 500m finals in 3:34:61 to beat Saipan Southern High School (3:52.89) and Marianas High School (disqualified). Kagman also led the preliminaries with a time of 3:18.75 against the 3:22.32 and 3:36.56 of SSHS and MHS, respectively. The Lady Ayuyus got 10 points in the two races, while the Lady Rays earned 6 and the Lady Dolphins received one.
In the 1,000m finale, MHS was the first finisher at 7:34.76 to get 8 points, followed by KHS (8:06.35) and Saipan Southern (9:38.98). The Lady Rays earlier ruled the 1,000m preliminary race with a time of 7:47.28, while MHS came in second (7:52.66), and KHS was disqualified.
In the boys 500m event, Kagman excelled both in the preliminary (2:59.12) and final races (2:56.57), while MHS (3:06.93/3:11.54) and SSHS (3:03.41/3:30.32) switched places.
In the 1,000m race, the Ayuyus logged 6:31.92 in the finals and 6:11.91 in the prelims. The Rays were ranked second in both the preliminary event (6:13.01) and finale (6:49.22), leaving MHS (7:10:44/7:01.37) at third place.
For the 500m mixed relay, Kagman posted 3:09.70 in the finale, while MHS and Saipan Southern recorded 3:10.87 and 3:27.94, respectively. The same rankings took place in the preliminaries with the Ayuyus registering 3:05:14 against the 3:14 10 of the Dolphins and 3:22.04 of the Rays.
In the 1,000m mixed relay, Kagman logged 6:54.87 in the prelims and 7:13.10 in the finals. MHS was second in the preliminary race (7:17.49), but dropped to third in the finals (7:22.46). Saipan Southern posted 7:34.38 for second place in the finals and more than three seconds faster than its prelim time (7:37.40).
In last Saturday’s long course from Kilili Beach to the 13 Fishermen, KHS’ boys crew completed the 4.5-mile race in 47:32 to prevail over SSHS (51:39) and MHS (59:52). In the girls division, Kagman submitted 54:22 to down MHS (55:11) and SSHS (55:39).
Meanwhile, races will resume this Saturday.
