5K bail set for man who ‘head-butted’ police officer
A $5,000 bail was imposed Tuesday on a habitual offender who was arrested last week for allegedly resisting arrest and allegedly “head-butting” a police officer in the process.
Superior Court Associate Judge Wesley Bogdan immediately remanded Ryan Rabauliman Pua, 34, back to the Department of Corrections and ordered him to return to court on Feb. 27 at 1:30pm for a preliminary hearing and on March 12 at 9am for his arraignment.
Assistant public defender Karie Comstock was appointed as counsel to Pua while assistant attorney general Steve Kessel appeared for the government.
Pua was arrested on the evening of Feb. 13 after allegedly “head-butting” a responding police officer and for causing trouble at the Saipan Vegas Resort.
According to court documents, Saipan Vegas had already banned Pua from the establishment on that day but he kept entering and later allegedly challenged an employee to a fight when the employee refused to give him a dollar.
As he was being arrested, Pua tried to “head-butt” the officer while shouting and demanding to know the reason for his arrest.
Police told the Superior Court that there is probable cause to charge Pua with disturbing the peace, assault and battery, and criminal trespass.
Last month, Pua was released after pleading guilty to assault and battery for which he served 60 days in prison.
Police said that, since his release, Pua has already been arrested four times for various offenses including disturbing the peace, misdemeanor theft, assault and battery, and criminal trespass.
In April 2017, Pua admitted to stealing a black pickup truck at an auto shop in Gualo Rai. Pua was sentenced to the maximum term of five years imprisonment, but all suspended except for one year. He was also ordered to pay a $1,000 fine, and was placed on two years’ probation, including 100 hours of community service.
