Kulo’ program seeks next generation of climate leaders

The University of Guam Center for Island Sustainability, the Micronesia Climate Change Alliance, and the UOG Green Army seek motivated youth ages 11 to 25 to participate in a first-time youth and young adults leadership program titled “Kulo’: Emerging Climate Leaders.”
In CHamoru, kulo’ is the trumpet shell used to gather the community together for a purpose. The Kulo’ cohort will work to amplify the call to climate action for their generation and throughout Micronesia, raising awareness and driving change.
The yearlong program will prepare youth to be leaders in the face of climate change based on their collective skills and interests. With support from CIS, MCCA, and the UOG Green Army, the Kulo’ cohort will:
• learn about the causes and impacts of the climate crisis locally, regionally, and globally;
• root themselves in cultural values and indigenous wisdom to build island resilience;
• connect with relevant regional leaders, agencies, organizations, and stakeholders;
• create solutions to address the climate crisis; and
• develop an action plan to raise awareness and mobilize their island communities.
The program will launch with the Kulo’: Emerging Climate Leaders Summit, a free three-day training embedded in the 11th UOG Conference on Island Sustainability from March 31 to April 2 with optional field trips and events on April 3. The conference is the region’s main forum for researchers, government agencies, organizations, and community groups to promote sustainability in the broader areas of environment, economy, society, and education.
