Hwang, Kwan advance to semis of boys U16

Juncheol Hwang and David Kwon advanced to the semifinals of the boys U16 singles in the 2020 White-Coconut Classic last Sunday at the American Memorial Park tennis courts.
Hwang defeated his mixed-up doubles partner, Sam Culp, in the opening round, 6-1, 6-0, while Kwon got the better of Min Seong Kim, 6-1, 6-1, in the lower half of the bracket.
Top seed Andy Kim got a bye in the first round and awaits the result of the match between Isaac Heo and Jun Wang.
In the boys U14 singles, the semifinals is set with top seed June Yu taking on Cody Shimizu in the upper half of the bracket, while No. 2 Wataru Kadokura will face Dave Bachani in lower half of the bracket.
Yu and Kadokura got byes in the first round, while Shimbu and Bachani took separate routes to advance to the second round.
Shimizu breezed past Jaden Wang in the opening round, 6-0, 6-1, while Bachani had a tougher time against Danny Jeoung, 6-4, 6-2.
Henry Choi, Aiden Kim, and Takeru Jim advanced to the second round in the boys U12 singles. Choi defeated Sunny Kang, 6-3, 6-0, while Kim was a 6-4, 6-2 victor against Ocean Kang. Jim didn’t even lift his racquet to beat Jace Choi after a walkover win.
In the boys U10 singles, No. 2 Landon Pudney scored the tourney’s biggest upset so far when he beat top seed Ian Chae, 6-2, last Sunday. A day earlier, Pudney blanked Quido Jambor, 6-0.
Other results in the age group saw Jihun Park beat Eamon Tang, 6-3, and Tang return the favor against Jambor, 6-4.
The 2020 White-Coconut Classic will resume this weekend with a three-day playdate, Feb. 15, 16, and 17 also at the AMP tennis courts in Garapan.
