Church group volunteers in Marine Beach cleanup

Armed with raincoats, gloves, and trash bags, volunteers of the Cleanup Brigade, which was organized by the Bureau of Environmental and Coastal Quality, braved the heavy rains last Feb. 1, Saturday, to pick up trash at the Marine Beach in Kagman.
About 760 lbs of trash were collected during the two-hour cleanup, with volunteers from BECQ and 14 members of The Church of Almighty God and the Christian of Holy City church.
Majority of the trash collected were plastic bottles, broken glass, and discarded iron buckets.
One of the volunteers, Jill Esther Yan, said their participation was a way for group to give back. “We live [on] Saipan. We like the weather here, and the local people are very friendly. We want to do something meaningful for Saipan,” Yan said.
According to BECQ’s Zabrina Shai, the cleanups are a message to “respect and protect our land, in the ways that our ancestors did.”
Every first Saturday of the month, the Cleanup Brigade meets up with volunteers to clean up a pre-identified area for two hours. Last month, the group collected a total of 360 lbs of trash in Garapan.
