High surf advisory and rip current warning
A high surf advisory is now in effect until 5pm today, Monday, along north facing reefs. There is also a high risk of rip currents until 5pm today along north facing reefs. A small craft advisory is also in effect until 5pm today.
Based on the information received from the National Weather Service in Tiyan, Guam, and compiled at the CNMI Emergency Operations Center State Warning Point, dangerous swimming and surfing conditions and localized beach erosion are projected today, Monday. Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water.
Northeast winds 15 to 25 knots with gusts up to 30 knots and seas 7 to 9 feet are expected within Marianas coastal waters until 5pm today.
A high surf advisory means hazardous surf of 7 to 9 feet is expected along north facing reefs in the surf zone. For the high rip current risk, dangerous and frequent rip currents are expected along north facing reefs of the Marianas.
The public is advised to avoid venturing out along the reef line, especially along north facing reefs. Large breaking waves can knock you down. If you become caught in a rip current, remain calm. Stay afloat while waiting for help. To swim out of a rip current, swim parallel to shore and back toward the beach when possible. Do not attempt to swim directly against a rip current as you will tire quickly.
Sea conditions will be hazardous to small craft, which could be capsized or damaged. Inexperienced mariners, especially those operating smaller vessels, should avoid sailing in these conditions. (PR)
