More students call on Apatang as part of a monthlong program

Over 29 students from South Korea who are on island to participate in a monthlong English program, called on Saipan Mayor David M. Apatang last Jan. 28 and were presented with certificates of appreciation for participating in a beach cleanup at the Sugar Dock last Jan. 18.
The students, who are from the third to ninth grade, came to Saipan under the MBC Global Camp that is being coordinated by the Sasamo company.
The students, who arrived last Jan. 4, are studying English at the Northern Marianas International School in Susupe, according to one of the teachers, You Jihyun.
In his meeting with the students, Apatang encouraged them to take a lot of pictures so that they can persuade their family and friends to take vacations in the CNMI.
When asked by one of the students about the hardest part of being a mayor, Apatang replied: “The hardest job that gives me the most headaches would be typhoons. Our people suffer from no gas, no water, and no power, so we have to find ways to help our community.”
Another question was, “How often does a mayor change?” Apatang replied, “[Every] four years but you can be a mayor for eight years.” He also added that he has been a mayor for five years and is now on the first year of his second term.
The students were accompanied at the Saipan Mayor’s Officer by three teachers and one coordinator.
