Hoo Wang and Erin Chung arranged a third round matchup in the girls U12 singles division of the SIS STUCO Tennis Tournament held last Sunday at the American Memorial Park and Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan tennis courts.

Wang had an auspicious debut in the tournament after blanking Hannah Chae in the opening round, 4-0, 4-0. She followed that up with an equally impressive 4-1, 4-0 victory against Anna Kwon. Kwon earlier beat Jeong Bin Park, 4-0, 4-0, in the first round.

Chung had an easier time in the first round after Isa Nishitani defaulted their opening round matchup. She then went up against Lina Tsukagoshi in the second round and advanced with a 4-0, 4-0 sweep. Tsukagoshi eased into the second round with a 4-1, 4-0 triumph against Anne Lee.

In the loser’s bracket of the girls U12 division, Lee bounced back with a 4-0, 4-0 win over Nishitani, while Chae got the better of Park, 4-0, 4-1. Both will contest the loser’s bracket finals next weekend.

In the girls U14 singles division, Helen Kim and Serin Chung arranged a third round showdown after going through similar paths in the first two rounds.

After getting a bye in the first round, Kim dominated her second round pairing against Seiyul Hong, 4-1, 4-1. Chung also got a bye in the first round before dispatching Savita Sikkel in the next round in an identical score of 4-1, 4-1.

The first day of the SIS STUCO Tennis Tournament was supposed to start last Saturday, but heavy rains postponed the competition until Sunday. The rest of the pairings in the boys U18, boys U16, boys U12, girls U12, and girls U14 will be played next weekend. The results of the U18 doubles and U12 doubles will be published in tomorrow’s edition of the Saipan Tribune.

The Saipan International School student council is organizing the SIS STUCO Tennis Tournament. It is being held to fundraise for the school’s many activities, including prom. SIS student and CNMI junior national player Malika Miyawaki is coordinating the entire tournament with the help of CNMI national tennis coach and sports hall of famer Jeff Race.
