Catholic Charities USA has given the Karidat Social Services a grant of $233,948 that will be used to provide rental assistance to families who remain displaced and homeless after Super Typhoon Yutu hit the CNMI in October 2018.

The grant will run for three years.

“With this grant, it will provide eligible applicants a three-month rental assistance in order to put them in a place where it is safe while they are working on repairing their house,” said acting Karidat executive director Judith Pangelinan.

In an interview with the disaster case manager Emma Corpuz, she stressed that the families or individuals that avail of this grant must be employed so that after the three-month assistance is up, the families will be able to support themselves.

Beneficiariesmust not be a recipient of the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s temporary housing program called VALOR, FEMA’s permanent housing assistance, or other federal programs.

Karidat ask that the applicants provide employment verification, two latest check stubs, and other income verifications—if you receive social security or disability benefits.

“It’s hard, especially if you are supporting an x amount of people and you’re still living in a tent or live somewhere where it’s not safe. How can you save for an apartment if you have a lot of obligations already?” asked Corpuz.

“We’re so grateful and happy to be able to assist those that are seeking assistance from us,” said Pangelinan.

According to Corpuz, they have already helped one client so far.

Corpuz was the disaster case manager for the VALOR program for about 6 months until she got employed into Karidat Social Service on Oct. 15, 2019.
