Kilili co-sponsors bill to protect man’amko from workplace discrimination

Man’amko facing age discrimination on the job has found an advocate in Delegate Gregorio Kilili C. Sablan (Ind-MP).
To protect the islands’ man’amko (elderly), Sablan has co-sponsored a bill that would protect older workers against discrimination.
“The data is overwhelming: Americans are working more and longer. But older workers can be particularly vulnerable to workplace discrimination,” Sablan said in his e-newletter.
Based on a survey conducted by the American Association of Retired Persons, about three in five older workers have seen or experienced age discrimination in the workplace, that 76% of them see age discrimination as a hurdle to finding a new job, and over 50% are prematurely pushed out of longtime jobs.
AARP also found age discrimination in the workplace in three main areas: recruitment and hiring, on-the-job bias, and in termination.
The bill, H.R 1230, or the Protecting Older Workers Against Discrimination Act, passed the U.S. House of Representatives on Jan. 15, Wednesday, and is now with the U.S. Senate, under the Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions.
“The bill reverses standing Supreme Court case law that makes it difficult for victims to prove they lost their job because of age discrimination,” Sablan said.
H.R. 1230 would also amend the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967.
