Ada: Suspect behind shooting threat is a student

Education Commissioner Dr. Alfred Ada said Tuesday that the perpetrator of the recent Kagman High School shooting threat is a student.

Although investigation remains ongoing for the threatening email that was sent about a shooting to the KHS principal, Ada said in a short interview last Tuesday that the suspect is a student.

However, as part of Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, Ada said no names or details about the student can be released.

The sad part is that the student, whose email the perpetrator used to send out the threat, is a good student and has no record of disciplinary concerns or actions under his belt, Ada said.

Saipan Tribune earlier quoted Ada as saying that the punishment for the transgression, if he or she is a student, includes possible expulsion.

Ada said the Public School System considered the email a Category 1 threat in terms of severity, one being the most severe. However, Ada added, the consequences also depend on whether it was a prank or had a deeper underlying issue.

KHS was placed on lockdown last Jan. 8 after the school’s administration received an email threat about a shooting incident that will happen at the school. The lockdown was lifted around noon.

According to a DPS statement, DPS received a 911 call from Kagman High School main office, reporting an email threat sent to the school. Police officers later met with Kagman High principal Leila Staffler, who briefed officers on the incident and showed officers that an email was sent to her school email address from a student’s email address.

The principal met with the student who owned the email address and that student denied sending the email. Upon further investigation, it was found that the student was transitioning to another class at the time the email was sent. It is now believed that the student may have left his/her email account logged in at one of the school’s computers and another student may have gone online using the logged-in account.

The school was later searched for weapons and, after finding nothing; the school was cleared at approximately 12pm.
