Man allegedly stole victim’s underwear

Renato Paz Gaviola, 53, was arrested last Friday for allegedly stalking a woman and going as far as allegedly taking her underwear that were hung on a clothesline outside her home and getting off on them before returning the item.
According to court documents, Gaviola was arrested on the grounds of stalking after he was caught on surveillance camera lurking outside the victim’s home before she came home from work, taking her underwear, and later returning it.
The victim told police that she had seen Gaviola roaming outside her residence in Garapan on multiple occasions for over a year. This prompted her to install surveillance cameras outside her home.
The victim said that when she arrived home from work on Jan. 6, she found that one of her undergarments that she had hung outside to dry appeared soiled. The victim later reviewed the surveillance footage of that day and saw a man she identified to be Gaviola take her underwear, enter a vehicle for five minutes, before returning her underwear.
The victim told police that she felt very unsafe and feared for the safety of her 6-year-old daughter and feared that he would one day hurt them.
In an interview with Gaviola on Jan. 10, he told police that he was the man on the footage and that he went to the victim’s home at around 11:30am on Jan. 6.
Gaviola also admitted that it was not the first time he took the victim’s undergarments and got off on them, that the captured footage was his second time.
Gaviola told police that he often fantasized about the victim, that he would often watch the victim when she wasn’t looking.
Superior Court Associate Judge Teresa Kim-Tenorio initially imposed a $5,000 cash bail on Gaviola. Superior Court Associate Judge Kenneth Govendo granted Gaviola’s request to modify his bail yesterday, allowing his release to a third-party custodian if he is able to post 10% of his initial bail with the $4,500 left as unsecured bond.
Gaviola was not able to set bail.
Gaviola is ordered to return to court on Jan. 21 at 1:30pm for a preliminary hearing and his arraignment on Feb. 24.
