Public warned to stay out of the water
The public is being warned that there is a high risk for rip currents along east facing reefs through Friday afternoon.
A small craft advisory is also in effect along coastal waters on Saipan, Tinian, and Rota until 5pm Friday.
A high surf advisory is now in effect through this afternoon.
North to northeast swell will produce hazardous surf along north facing reefs through this afternoon.
Along north facing reefs, expect hazardous surf of 8 to 10 feet to gradually subside below hazardous levels by this afternoon. The risk of rip currents will also drop to moderate.
Along east facing reefs, larger breaking waves will continue to generate strong and frequent rip currents. The risk of rip currents should fall to moderate by Friday afternoon.
Small craft can be blown off course or capsized. The highest sea heights will be east of the Marianas.
Wind speeds up to 25 knots are expected to produce hazardous conditions for operating small craft.
Based on the information received from the National Weather Service in Tiyan, Guam, and compiled at the CNMI Emergency Operations Center State Warning Point, east winds 15 to 25 knots are seen to increase to 10 to 20 knots, with frequent gusts to 25 knots and seas of 8 to 10 feet. Seas could occasionally reach 11 feet over Saipan and Tinian waters.
Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water. The public is advised to avoid venturing out along the reef line, especially along north and east facing reefs and beaches. Large breaking waves can knock you down and injure you.
Strong rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
The public and inexperienced mariners, especially those operating smaller vessels, are being advised to avoid sailing in these conditions. (Saipan Tribune)
