BECQ resumes monthly cleanup in Garapan
Start the year right by volunteering!
The Bureau of Environmental and Coastal Quality’s Cleanup Brigade is back and off to a clean start with a cleanup activity, as they are set to pick up trash from the Carolinian Utt to the Garapan Fishing Base tomorrow, Jan. 4.
Volunteers who would like to help can meet the BECQ representatives on Saturday at the Carolinian Utt parking lot at 8am. Volunteers will be split into groups and clean until 10am, break for drinks, and then continue, if needed.
“The cleanup brigade has been brought back to remind us that the simplest act counts toward the bigger efforts of a safer and healthier island environment,” BECQ’s Zabrina Shai said.
The last activity of the Cleanup Brigade was in June last year.
The BECQ is looking forward to a successful year of monthly cleanups and is inviting everyone to join the brigade. “Let us work together for the health of our coral reefs and cleanliness of our beaches for everyone to enjoy,” Shai said.
Established in 1997, the Cleanup Brigade consists of dedicated BECQ staff and community volunteers who meet every first Saturday of the month at 8am to clean up a pre-chosen location for two hours.
The trash is hauled away for disposal at the Marpi landfill, to prevent it from becoming marine debris. Last year, during the International Coastal Cleanup, Saipan volunteers collected almost 6,000 lbs of trash from all over the island.
