EOC: Stay out of the water

A high surf advisory remains in effect until 6am today, Friday, and there is a high risk of rip currents through this afternoon.

A high surf advisory means that high surf will affect beaches in the advisory area, producing localized beach erosion and dangerous swimming conditions.

Based on the information received from the National Weather Service in Tiyan, Guam, the CNMI Emergency Operations Center State Warning Point is advising the public to avoid venturing near the reef line, especially along north and east facing reefs. Large waves may knock you down and injure you. Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water.

Along north facing reefs, expect hazardous surf of 8 to 11 feet to gradually subside to between 7 and 10 feet overnight. Surf could fall below hazardous levels Friday. The risk of rip currents is high.

Along east facing reefs, surf of 8 to 10 feet will continue below advisory levels but enough to generate a high risk of rip currents. The risk of rip currents may fall to moderate by tonight. (Saipan Tribune)
