DPS: Apostol died of cardiac arrest due to injuries

The Department of Public Safety said yesterday that Sergio Apostol, 67, who passed Friday last week after a car collision across the Shell gas station in Puerto Rico last Dec. 16, died of sudden cardiac arrest due to his injuries in the car crash.
The DPS statement said that Dr. Tanuja Edvalson of the Commonwealth Health Center pronounced the victim dead at 11:50pm on Dec. 19, 2019.
This crash incident marks the CNMI’s second traffic fatality for the year 2019, DPS said.
The two female occupants of the beige Toyota Highlander that hit Apostol’s vehicle sustained minor injuries, received treatment and was released.
Apostol, on the other hand, lingered for days in the Intensive Care Unit of CHC before passing away last Friday morning.
Police said no alcohol was involved in the crash, and that investigators are trying to determine if speed was a factor.
According to Saipan Tribune archives, the car collision occurred at about 8pm last Dec. 16 across the Shell gas station in Puerto Rico.
Apostol was rushed to CHC right after and was immediately brought to the operating room for emergency surgery at about 9:30pm.
Shell surveillance footage that was leaked on social media showed an SUV speeding through Puerto Rico just across Shell at 7:59pm as the sedan that Apostol was driving turned slowly into the gas station.
The SUV collided with the passenger side of the sedan, sending it flying backwards as the SUV continued forward before hitting a nearby power pole.
