Half-day sessions extended

Despite a recent announcement of full-day sessions at the Public School System after the Christmas break, it has been decided to extend the half-day sessions until March 2020 at the request of school principals.
According to Education Commissioner Dr. Alfred Ada, he met with PSS principals last Dec.19 to discuss the matter. Following the meeting, Ada and the principals came to a decision to extend the timeline for full-day schedule for all the schools to March 2020 or earlier.
“The principals requested to give them more time until the instructional materials and classroom furniture arrive. Most, if not all, resources were damaged from Super Typhoon Yutu and they needed to be replaced. Getting them on island takes time. Many of these necessary items are critical to have a conducive learning environment,” he said.
Kagman High School, Chacha Oceanview Middle School, and William S. Reyes Elementary School, which were set to remain on half-day session indefinitely due to extensive repairs needed to plumbing and electrical issues, will return to full-day sessions too in March 2020.
In a previous interview with Ada, he said that Oleai, San Vicente, Francisco M. Sablan, and Koblerville elementary schools were set to return to full-day sessions on Jan. 6.
Ada said these schools underwent repairs since the devastation of Super Typhoon Yutu and the repairs are set to be complete or nearly complete come January.
Dandan Middle School is the first school to return to full session since the first week of December.
