Mariners warned of hazardous seas after Chile quake

HONOLULU—The U.S. Coast Guard is advising the public to remain vigilant of hazardous currents and tidal surges following the earthquake off Chile.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has issued an advisory with possible sea level changes and strong currents throughout the main Hawaiian Islands, which could be hazardous to swimmers, boaters, and individuals near the shore.

The estimated time of increased currents and sea conditions is approximately 3:30am Wednesday. These conditions can continue for several hours.

The Coast Guard advises all mariners to ensure that their vessels are secured for possible changes in sea conditions and that all individuals use caution when taking part in water activities.

The public should heed all warnings from local first responders and seek updated weather conditions before heading out on the water.

Updated weather conditions will be broadcast on VHF channel 16. (USCG)
