WASHINGTON, D.C.—Delegate Madeleine Z. Bordallo (D-GU) has announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded the Government of Guam $488,460 in federal grants.
The Guam Department of Public Health and Social Services was awarded $446,470 for the Guam Non-Communicable Disease Prevention and Control Program. The funds will be used to support local efforts to reduce non-communicable diseases on Guam, such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, and diabetes. The program also addresses smoking, nutrition, alcohol, physical activity, and obesity.

The Guam Department of Administration was awarded $41,990 for Guam’s State Health Insurance Assistance Program. This grant will be used to support efforts to provide free counseling and assistance to Medicare recipients on Guam.

“Many in our community suffer from heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and other non-communicable diseases. The grant for the Non-Communicable Disease Prevention and Control Program will enhance Guam Public Health’s efforts to combat these diseases and promote healthier lifestyles among our people. Further, the SHIP grant will provide Public Health with resources to provide counseling and assistance to Medicare recipients and their families. I commend our local agencies for pursuing these grants, and I look forward to them benefiting our community.”
